Acidity is the quantitative capacity of a water or solution to neutralize an alkali. In layman’s terms that means pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline.
When pH is low, your household plumbing pipes may leach copper into the water causing green stains on bathroom sinks and porcelain surfaces. The water itself may also appear to have a blue-green tint.

The term “neutralizer” is commonly used to refer to calcite or magnesia acid-neutralizing filters used to neutralize acidity and/or reduce free carbon dioxide in water and thereby raise the pH of acidic water. A common water treatment chemical, sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), which is used for pH modification, as an alkaline builder in some soaps and detergents, and in the lime-soda ash water softening process.
